Expert Q&A
I use my laptop and smartphone in public places, including cafes and my workplace. How can I prevent Peeping Toms from seeing what’s on my screen?
There are a few things you can do to prevent unwanted eyes from seeing what's on your screen.
For one, if you're logging on to a public Wi-Fi network, make sure the network is hosted by the cafe or hotel -- not a "rogue" connection, which could be someone in a van out to steal your personal information. When in doubt, ask the establishment for the name of the hosted Wi-Fi. You may pay more than what you bargained for with tempting "free" Wi-Fi hotspots.
Secondly, ensure your laptop has a firewall. This is usually built into the operating system to prevent cyber-snooping. Make sure it’s running up-to-date Internet security software with antivirus and anti-malware programs to detect and safely remove any threats -- whether they're local or online.
Thirdly, laptop and smartphone owners can buy special screens that stop over-the-shoulder snooping. (Many business travelers use these on airplanes.) These adhesive shields can be custom-fitted to your particular device’s screen -- such as a 13-inch laptop or 3.5-inch touch-screen smartphone. With this device, you’ll be able to view your computer or smartphone screen normally when looking at it straight-on. However, if someone looks at your screen from an angle to see what you’re reading or typing, your screen will look black to them.
