I love using my iPad and I bring it everywhere, but I’m worried someone could access my data if I lose it. What can I do to protect my info?

Great question. I also share your love for the iPad. But because you bring it everywhere, there is an increased risk of losing it or having it stolen.

To protect your iPad -- and, perhaps more important, the data that resides in it -- start by password-protecting your device with a four-digit passcode. Only those who know the correct code will be able to use your tablet. To set a passcode, tap on the “Settings” icon, followed by “General” and then “Passcode Lock.”

Second, be sure to use the free Find My iPhone service that is offered by Apple. Despite its name, it also works with the iPad. If your tablet is lost or stolen, simply log in to your password-protected account on a computer (via Me.com) or the free Find My iPhone application installed on another Apple device, such as an iPod Touch or iPhone.

With this feature, you can remotely lock the missing iPad, have it ring loudly (in case you think it’s stuck under the sofa cushions), wipe the tablet’s data clean, or locate the device on a map using its A-GPS (Assisted Global Positioning Service) radio. Even if you can see where your device is on a map, though, you should contact the authorities to retrieve it rather than trying to get it back from thieves yourself.

There are also products that let you lock the iPad with a steel cable to secure it to a backpack, briefcase, purse or table. Some products set off a high-decibel alarm if tampered with. But keep in mind that these products will serve only as a deterrent: A motivated thief can try to cut the cable and run off with the device anyway.

Finally, there are Bluetooth accessories you can wirelessly pair with the iPad, such as a high-tech wristband or wristwatch. You can set these to vibrate or chime if you accidentally walk away from your tablet.
