My daughter told me Facebook now has a face-scanning feature. What is it? Should I be concerned?

New Facebook features roll out every couple of months or so, and many raise privacy concerns. This is because the world’s biggest social network -- now with more than 750 million users -- was designed from the ground up to share information with those who matter to you. But how wide a net you want to cast is entirely up to you.

Unveiled this summer, a new Facebook face-scanning feature is meant to help you quickly tag people in your network. “Tagging” refers to the act of identifying someone in a photo and linking the tag back to their Facebook page.

Using facial recognition technology -- often found in other photo software, like Google’s Picasa and Microsoft’s Windows Live Photo Gallery -- Facebook has added the option to automatically tag a person for you after it recognizes a face that has been identified in another photo. Therefore, instead of you having to manually tag your spouse in 53 different pictures from a recent vacation, Facebook’s facial-tagging feature will do it all for you instead.

Like most other Facebook features, you can disable facial recognition if you’re not comfortable with it. Here’s how.

1. Log in to your Facebook profile.

2. Click on “Account” on the upper right-hand side of the page and then select “Privacy Preferences.”

3. Once inside, “Custom” should already be selected. If not, click it. Now select “Customize settings” near the bottom of the screen.

4. Still with me? Good. We’re almost done. Look for a section called “Things others share.” Here you will see the option “Suggest photos of me to friends.” Click “Edit settings” and then turn the feature from “Enabled” to “Disabled.”

That’s it!
