I bought one of those Eye-Fi cards to wirelessly upload photos from my camera to my PC. Are they safe?

Digital cameras offer many advantages over traditional film models, including high-resolution "megapixel" quality, reusable memory cards and the ability to see the photos immediately after taking them. But transferring those photos to a computer -- for editing, archiving or emailing purposes -- can be a tricky job for some.

Usually, this involves connecting the camera to a computer via its USB cable or taking out the memory card and inserting it into the correct reader on the PC or printer. Now, though, a line of Eye-Fi products aims to simplify this process by introducing wireless into the equation.

As long as you're within range of your home wireless network, these souped-up Secure Digital cards will automatically and wirelessly upload photos (and in some models, video too) directly from your camera to your Windows or Mac computer or favorite online photo-sharing, printing or social networking site. About 100 sites are supported, including popular ones like Facebook, Flickr, Kodak Gallery and YouTube.

Is it safe, you ask? Yes. During the set-up process, you'll choose where you want your files sent. The Eye-Fi card will only send them to the computer of your choice and/or the sharing site you specify. Every Eye-Fi card also comes with a "selective share" option, which lets you pick which photos and videos you wish to transfer wirelessly.

Keep in mind, if your wireless network is password-protected (and hopefully, it is), you'll need to first type in the security code to grant the Eye-Fi access. This is done on your computer during the set-up process.

You can program the Eye-Fi card to support up to 32 wireless networks in total, such as one at home, another at the office and a third at a parent's place. Another scenario: You can upload your vacation snapshots to a photo site while you're still away by having the Eye-Fi card join your hotel's network, so the photos and videos are waiting for you when you get home.
